Gossip Role Play Activity — Be the End of the Line

Role Play Activity — Be the End of the Line

Time: 15–20 minutes
Purpose: Practice stopping gossip with love — before it spreads — using Stop, Check, Speak and the Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12).

Ground rules first:

  • These are made-up stories. No real names, no real people’s business.
  • Anyone can pass and just observe. No pressure.
  • We’re not practicing being perfect. We’re practicing pausing, checking our hearts, and choosing words that give grace (Ephesians 4:29).

How it works — groups of 3:

  • The Bringer: starts the conversation, tempted to gossip
  • The Listener: practices redirecting with love
  • The Observer: watches for Stop, Check, Speak and speaks life at the end — what did the Listener do well?

Do 3–4 minutes per scenario, then rotate so everyone gets to be the Listener.

Listener starter lines you can borrow:

  • “Hold on — is that mine to hear? Have you talked to them?”
  • “I don’t want to talk about her when she’s not here. Let’s pray for her without the details.”
  • “I hear you’re frustrated. What part is yours, and do you want help talking to them directly?” (Matthew 18:15)
  • “Would I want this shared about me?” (Matthew 7:12)

Scenario 1 — The Prayer Request Disguise

After a meeting, the Bringer says: “We really need to pray for Lisa — did you hear she relapsed again and lost her kids’ visits? Don’t tell anyone, just pray.” Listener goal: Protect Lisa’s story. Pray generally without repeating the details, and don’t pass it on. (Proverbs 11:13; 18:8)

Scenario 2 — Venting in the Hallway

The Bringer is frustrated with a leader and says: “She always picks favorites. Everyone’s talking about it. Don’t you think she’s fake?” Listener goal: Don’t join in to feel close. Name your own part, redirect to going directly, and refuse to pile on. (James 4:11; Matthew 18:15)

Scenario 3 — The Phone Call Chain

A friend calls the Bringer, who now wants to tell the Listener: “I heard from someone at church that he got arrested again. I’m only telling you so you can check on him.” Listener goal: Be the end of the line. Don’t repeat a false or unchecked report. Suggest checking on the person directly instead of spreading the story. (Exodus 23:1; Proverbs 26:20)

Scenario 4 — The Repair

This time the Bringer is the one with a real concern about a friend’s attitude in class and wants to handle it God’s way. Listener goal: Help them plan a gentle, private, direct conversation — what to say, when, and with what heart. End by praying for both people. (Matthew 18:15; Ephesians 4:29)

Whole-group debrief

  1. Which scenario felt most familiar — and why?
  2. What words or phrases actually helped stop the gossip without shaming the Bringer?
  3. How did it feel to be the Listener who said no? How did it feel to hear that no as the Bringer?
  4. Where does the Golden Rule show up in this — would I want this shared about me?
  5. What is one sentence you can keep ready this week for when gossip comes to you?
