Psalm 34:18 (ESV) “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
There is a kind of broken that doesn’t show on the outside. You smile at work. You answer “I’m fine” when people ask. But inside, something is shattered, and you’re quietly wondering if God sees it — or worse, if He’s stepped back because of it.
Let me tell you what this verse says to that wondering: He is near. Not near to the put-together. Not near to the ones who have it all figured out. Near to the brokenhearted. Near to the crushed in spirit. Your brokenness doesn’t push God away — it’s exactly where He draws close.
I know what it is to be crushed in spirit. To sit in the wreckage and think this is where the story ends. But the God who found me there didn’t wait for me to climb out first. He came near in the middle of it. He saves the crushed in spirit — not after they recover, not once they’ve earned it. Right there, in the crush.
So if your heart is broken today — over a child, a marriage, a loss, a battle nobody else can see — hear this: you are not abandoned in it. The Lord is near. Nearer than the pain. Nearer than the shame. Nearer than you feel He is. Feelings are real, but they are not the measure of His presence. His Word is.
Lord, thank You that You don’t run from broken hearts — You run to them. For the one reading this who feels crushed today, make Your nearness more than words. Let them sense You in the middle of it. Hold them together where they’re falling apart, and save them the way only You can. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
