Isaiah 61:3 — “To bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.”
This verse is the heartbeat of everything God has done in my life — it’s why my book, my story, my whole message carries the words “beauty for ashes.” Because I’ve lived both sides of that exchange.
Ashes are what’s left when the fire is done with you. I know ashes. The burnt-down remains of relationships, of years, of a life I thought was over. Ashes don’t look like they can become anything. You don’t plant in ashes. You sweep them up and throw them away.
But God doesn’t sweep up ashes. He trades for them. Beauty instead of ashes. Not beauty from your own rebuilding — beauty instead of. It’s an exchange, and only He can make it. He takes the ruined, burnt, done-for places and puts a crown there. A crown! Not a patch. Not a cover-up. A crown — something royal, something that says you belong to the King now.
And notice — He doesn’t just take the ashes. He gives oil for mourning, praise for despair. He doesn’t leave you empty-handed after the trade. He fills the places grief hollowed out with joy that doesn’t make sense to anyone watching.
If you’re staring at ashes today — your own or someone you love — don’t sweep them up yet. Bring them to Him. He’s still in the exchange business, and He’s never made a bad trade.
Prayer: Lord, here are my ashes. I hand You what’s burnt and broken, and I receive what only You can give — beauty, joy, praise. Crown me with Your grace today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
