Just Stay Calm

“The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” — Exodus 14:14 (ESV)

Israel stood at the edge of the Red Sea with nowhere to go. An army behind them. Water in front of them. And panic rising — they cried out that it would have been better to stay slaves in Egypt than to die free in the wilderness.

Sound familiar? Not the army or the sea, maybe — but the moment when you’re trapped between what God delivered you from and the thing that looks impossible in front of you. The diagnosis. The bill. The person you love who won’t stop using. The past that keeps galloping up behind you, chariots and all.

And into that panic, God speaks a word that almost sounds impossible: be silent. Stay calm. Not because the threat isn’t real — Pharaoh’s army was real. But because the battle was never Israel’s to fight. Their job was to stand still and watch God be God.

Here’s the part that undoes me: God didn’t ask them to swim. He didn’t ask them to fight six hundred chariots with their bare hands. He asked them to stop striving long enough to see Him split the sea.

Maybe that’s where you are today — worn out from fighting a battle that’s above your weight class. Can I tell you something? Some battles aren’t yours. The one for your freedom? For your family? For your future? The Lord Himself will fight for you. Your part is the hardest part for people like us: be still, and let Him.

Lord, I bring You the battles I’ve been trying to fight in my own strength. Teach me to be still — not lazy, not afraid, just trusting. Fight for me like You fought at the Red Sea, and calm my heart while You do it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
