Shut the Door and Pray

“But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” — Matthew 6:6 (ESV)

Prayer was never meant to be a performance. Jesus doesn’t tell us to pray louder, longer, or where everyone can see it — He tells us to shut the door. Just you and your Father, in secret, where nobody is watching and nothing has to be impressive.

That’s where so much of my own prayer life has lived — in my journal in the morning, in my night prayer before bed, in the quiet moments when I shut out the noise and just talk to Him honestly. No audience. No perfect words. Just a Father who sees, who hears, and who meets you right there behind the closed door.

If prayer has ever felt intimidating, like you need the right words or the right voice, this verse takes all of that pressure off. You don’t have to pray like anyone else. Shut the door, be honest, and trust that your Father in secret is already listening.

Prayer: Father, thank You for meeting me in the quiet. Teach me to come to You without performing, to be honest behind the closed door, and to trust that You see and hear me there. In Jesus’ name, amen.
